Together, breeding and biotechnology make up the two core platforms of Monsanto’s technology pipeline. Monsanto uses the two platforms together to develop some of the highest quality products on the market.
Breeding is largely focused on improving the overall genetic base of a crop by using technology to identify the most powerful plant breeding stock.
Biotechnology identifies and applies beneficial genetic traits to enhance a plant’s characteristics, such as producing insect resistance, herbicide tolerance and drought-tolerance.
Depending on what we are hoping to accomplish and which pathway shows more promise, we may choose one platform to pursue. We may also choose to use both – combining elite germplasm developed through breeding with one or multiple biotechnology traits. The advantage in having both platforms is that Monsanto is perfectly positioned to match the right approach with the right opportunity.
